Dartmouth is a town in Devon on the south coast of England, so named because it lies at the mouth of the River Dart. The river is named after a Celtic word that means ‘river where oak trees grow’. The mouth of the River Dart is narrow and the town of Kingswear is located on the bank opposite Dartmouth. Dartmouth Castle guards the narrow entrance to the Dart Estuary and Dartmouth. Dartmouth has long been a strategic deep-water port and it has been a home for the Royal Navy since the reign of Edward III (1326 – 1377). Crusaders sailed from Dartmouth in 1147 and 1190, amongst others, and the Pilgrim Fathers put in there on 20 August 1620, en route to America.
